How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they offer a beautiful view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so key to a home, they receive a lot of action. It’s wise to keep your windows clean so that continue to enhance your home.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors swears on:

  1. Begin by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Do not use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment on the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to pick up any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to get your glass clean. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Generously apply the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if any streaks remain.

Here are some more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals prefer microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
